The move

Tomorrow is the big day. It's really hard to believe that we're actually moving! We have lived here for our entire marriage - almost 7 years. It's by far the longest I've lived somewhere since I graduated from high school 15 years ago! We are more than ready for the change. Boxes are packed. The truck is rented. A number of friends will be descending on our house at 12:30 to load up. The new home will be a much better situation for all of us. We do wish things were going better on the townhome front...

Per my blog entry a couple of weeks ago, we thought we had it rented. We hadn't had a really great feeling about the couple who wanted it. We tried moving forward, and set a date for them to bring us a security deposit. But, that day came and went and they disappeared with no more communication. We felt that ultimately it was an answer to our prayers about whether they were right. However, we currently have no one renting it. We've had lookers, and have a rather promising couple coming next week, so our fingers are crossed and prayers are being said that something will firm up soon. I've moved on from being completely stressed. We feel that it's time to make the move and take a leap of faith, and whatever happens, we'll be OK.

It seems to be a challenging time for so many people, and the housing thing has proven to be a big challenge for us. Perhaps someday it will be totally resolved!

We won't have internet service until Tuesday, so no more posts until after that. Have a great weekend! We'll be settling into our little house on the prairie!

Where's my baby?????

I finally did it - I got Lucas's hair cut. Yes, it was WAY overdue. He was beyond shaggy, approaching downright furry. It was bad. But, he's my baby. And I knew getting his baby locks cut would make him look, well, not like a baby. But I was not prepared for how much it changed him! I keep looking at him and wondering where my baby went. He looks SO different! And I thought those eyes looked big before the haircut. Wow. What a handsome little guy!

Discovering Chuck E. Cheese

We had a fantastic family outing to Chuck E. Cheese for Connor's birthday. All 3 kids LOVED it. Even Lucas was dancing to the music and loving the little toddler rides. Connor is so happy to be 5!

Connor is 5!

Happy Birthday Connor! 5 already, crazy! Sounds like such a big number, so many big things ahead.

A few things about Connor:

He is a very active boy. Loves to run, jump, climb, go hiking in the mountains, play in water, etc. He has serious "boy legs." You know, cuts and bruises up and down his shins. He would live outside if he could.

He is SUPER curious. It's not enough for him to know about things, he has to experience things (full hands-on exploration of how things work).

He continues to love cars and trucks.

He loves animals, especially cats. He also is way into bugs, and is constantly looking for creepy crawly things everywhere we go.

He loves movies; right now he's into Peter Pan, Cars, 101 Dalmations and the Little Mermaid.

He enjoys reading and is very interested in letters and words and sounding things out. He loves Go Dog Go and Big Dog, Little Dog (P.D. Eastman books).

He loves his Primary class.

When he is in a sweet mood, he melts my heart x a thousand. These days, he's been into some boundary-testing and can throw some attitude from time to time. Ahhh, the joys of growing up.

We love Connor to pieces. He's our firstborn, and teaches us new things continually. We started the day with a family dance party to the Birthday Song by the Beatles. For dinner we are taking him to Chuck E. Cheese. We've never been (how have we escaped this?), but he's been begging to go for some time, so tonight's the night. Then we're having his party the weekend after we move into the new house. I know his favorite gift of all will be his very own yard! I may never see the child again...

What birthday wouldn't be complete without a trip down memory lane:

I thought I'd be celebrating

I was released today as Primary president. I guess this was inevitable since we're moving next weekend. I was called exactly two years ago this month, two years that have flown by.

Simply put, I was a blubbering idiot on and off today, especially at the end of Primary when I said goodbye to the children. I think I got about 50 little hugs, mainly from the junior Primary kiddos, as many of the older kids are much too cool for that. I have really enjoyed some parts of my calling, and other parts, well, not so much. Just like any calling, I guess. I actually enjoy doing sharing time and the quarterly activities, even though they can be a lot of work.

Even though we are moving on Saturday, we are going to come to the ward next Sunday so Brian can teach one more time, and help confirm our friends' son who is getting baptized on Saturday. I'll actually get to hear one of his lessons! And attend Relief Society! It has been YEARS since I've been in R.S., back when I was in the R.S. presidency when Connor was a baby. I've been in Young Women's and Primary since then.

It's kind of weird thinking of going to a new ward. We have been in this ward the entire almost 7 years of our marriage. Wonder what's in store? We do know it's a super young ward with 4 nurseries. Pity that Primary president! ;)

Fun evening at the zoo

We spent a fantastic evening at the zoo yesterday. Our friends Danny and Vycci invited us. They have a membership (we've had one in past years, but not this year). Last night was a members-only evening, and we were their guests.

At the polar bear exhibit:

Lucas was so excited as we rode the train; look at those crazy eyes!
Isaac, Marina, Isabel and Connor patiently waiting our turn on the carousel:

Hippo watching:

It was a fantastic night! It was a somewhat cool, clear, post-storm evening (did you see our CRAZY weather yesterday?). Evening is my new favorite time at the zoo. I loved the cooler temps without the sun beating down, plus the animals were much livelier. All in all a great time! Connor and Isabel like the zoo more and more each time we go, and Lucas really enjoyed it for the first time. He's point to things, then look at me with a huge grin. So fun. Isabel's favorite animal yesterday was the elephant (no surprise), and Connor said his faves were the polar bear and the lions.

Allergy test

Connor had allergy skin testing yesterday so we could get an update of what his allergy situation is. It's not the most pleasant experience, so I let him bring along his long-time favorite, yellow puppy. Connor wanted to see how yellow puppy looked as the doctor:

Waiting to get started:
When you have skin testing, they map out your back with ink. Then tiny drops of purified allergen extracts are pricked into the skin's surface with tiny needles. You wait 15 minutes, and if you are allergic to any of the allergens, those injections will swell up and itch like a big bug bite. If you have a big reaction, I think the itching is way worse than the pricking b/c you can't scratch it during that time to allow for a full reaction. Then they measure the reaction to see how allergic you are. Connor was such a trooper! I was amazed at how great he did. I think watching Peter Pan during the test and the promise of a new truck, along with yellow puppy's help, got him through. Also, I did blow on his back for the 15 minutes to keep the itching at bay. You can't see it really well in this picture, but he reacted really strongly to 3 things: peanuts (bummer, hoped that had subsided); cats; and house dust. The pollens and grasses didn't react, but with his hayfever symptoms, the doctor said sometimes you can test and they won't show up even though you have symptoms, and then you re-test a few years down the road and the back "lights up like the 4th of July." They also suspect some mild asthma, so he now has an inhaler, in addition to allergy meds and an EPI Pen in case of a severe anaphylactic reaction. Oh, and a grad party reaction update: they tested for the 3 foods I thought might have caused that reaction, and they were all negative. So they suspect a trace of peanut must have cross-contaminated something he ate. Lovely. You never know, I guess, and have to always be ready.
And the great reward!

Museum Day

On Tuesday the kids and I went to the Museum of Nature and Science with my friend Susan and her cute girls. We had a great time! The dinosaurs were a favorite, especially with Isabel, who loves huge things (dinosaurs, elephants, hippos, etc).

She was especially fascinated with this large dinosaur tooth. So much so, in fact, that she is STILL talking about it. "Mom, you remember that big, huge dinosaur tooth?" "Yes, I remember." Then she says, "me and that huge dinosaur tooth." I don't know why she was so obsessed with it, but here it is:

Connor chose to see the bug exhibit; he is totally my bug boy. Loves bugs x a million. If you look closely you'll see he's closely examining the stinging insect collection (poor child has inherited my phobia - I have created a monster!)
Connor (and Jenna) loved this bug game where you had to try and "catch" the bugs as they flew around the screen:

More fun hands-on learning:
We also went to the mummy exhibit. Apparently Connor did not know what a mummy was, because when I told the kids we were going to see the mummies, he got really quiet for a minute and then asked, "will there be daddies there too?" I kid you not. Totally cliche, I know, but he was totally serious, so it was super funny to me. So now he knows all about mummies.

Thanks Susan for a fun morning!

Gymnastics wrap-up

Isabel had her last gymnastics class on Monday. She's been taking gymnastics since October, and has come really far since then. It really took her a while to warm up to things, but I am so glad we stuck with it. She has done a tremendous job. Brian, Nanna (Brian's mom) and her brothers were on hand for the final performance. They started with a dance/gymnastics routine that was super cute, but for some reason I'm having problems uploading that video. I'll keep trying...

They did a little mini-meet, with routines on the floor, beam, bars and trampoline. Brian plays camerman, and says it's difficult to get good pics in that gym. So I don't have great ones, but here's a few.

On the beam:

She loves the parachute we do at the end of each class:
Getting hand stamps is always a fave:
With her fun teacher, Miss Edie, and her ribbon and lollipop for good work:

Her beam routine:

She's so tiny and is rather graceful for 2, she made a great gymnast. But I have my sights set on dance this fall - I think she will love that as well! Good job Isabel!

Every once in a while...

...I let my babies sleep in my arms. Usually, I need nap times to get things done. But now and then I can't resist snuggling with this...

Soccer wrap up

Soccer has come to an end - we had our team party last week. Connor did pretty well overall. He definitely enjoyed practices more than the actual games, but that's OK. His coach (Coach Matt) was fantastic. He was great with the kids, Connor really liked him. He did lots of fun extras with the kids, like a team cheer and a team dance whenever we scored a goal (although they don't keep score at this age). The team was named the Red Lizards. I had looked forward to eight weeks of spending beautiful spring evenings relaxing and watching games, but it turned out to be a somewhat cold, snowy, rainy and windy spring. A lot of games had to be postponed. We ended up watching lots of games all bundled up.

Anyway, the wrap up party was fun. They celebrated with red cupcakes for the Red Lizards:

Connor with his soccer trophy:
And little sister getting in on the cupcake action (she can smell sugar from a mile away, I kid you not):
I think his favorite part of soccer was the "Go Red Lizards" cheer:

All in all, a fun experience!

Some close calls

We had a crazy weekend - a grad party Friday night, a birthday party yesterday, and a birthday party today. We also have had some close calls with each of the kids...

Connor: At Friday night's grad party, I noticed Connor's lip was becoming VERY swollen. Like three times normal size. Because he has a peanut allergy, I immediately started freaking out. After I checked all the food and figured out what he ate, I determined he didn't eat any peanuts. Other than his lip bothering him, he seemed OK. So I just kept a close watch on him. Then on the way home, he started complaining that his stomach hurt. Uh-oh. Yep, you guess it. Shortly after we got home, he got "that look" and I knew it was coming. Big throw up. Clearly between the swollen lip and vomiting, he was reacting to something. I called my pediatrician (after hours the calls get routed to Children's Hospital telephone triage nurses, who are fantastic). The nurse wanted me to hold the phone to him so she could listen to him breathing as he was sleeping. She thought she heard wheezing, so did I, and that can be dangerous. She suggested we go to the ER. As we were getting ready to leave, we listened up close for a while and couldn't hear any wheezing. I think maybe the way he was sleeping had caused the wheezing sound. And his lip was finally looking less swollen, so we decided to watch him closely for the next few hours while we slept, and would bring him in if he worsened at all. He didn't. The only thing I can pinpoint as the culprit was cantaloupe. Apparently, it can cause allergic reactions.

And then at Saturday's party he was rolling around in the grass. His hay fever totally blew up, and he did truly start wheezing. I am concerned he is developing asthma too (which I have). We are back to the allergist this week, have lots of things to go over. Poor kid! He is having a terrible bout with allergies as of late.

Isabel: This morning she started crying really hard, and came running to me saying that she "bumped her eye on Ariel." She had been playing with an Ariel (the Little Mermaid) figurine, and somehow it poked her eye. She must have broken a blood vessel, because the inside of one of her eyes is BRIGHT red and looks terrible. I'll see how it looks in the morning, may have to call the pediatrician.

Lucas: This evening Lucas was playing and we heard him start to scream. He was lying face down in a bucket of legos. He apparently had been reaching for one and fell in head first and was stuck like that. But the worst part is he knocked his top front tooth on a lego and it was bleeding A LOT. For a minute I thought he had knocked his tooth loose, but upon closer inspection, found he had cut a deep gash in the gum right above the tooth, and (don't read if you have a weak stomach) a flap of gum was hanging loose over his tooth. Another emergency call to the pediatrician (Children's nurses). The bleeding stopped after a bit, and they said just to watch it and feed him soft foods only for the next day or two.

Sheesh! What an action packed weekend!

The house

Here is a pic of the new house! Of course, we'll do interior pics after May 31. Yay!!!

.

Little House on the Prairie

You might want to be sitting down when you read this, because the news might be difficult to believe ... WE'RE MOVING!!!

Many of you know that we have lived in our townhome for almost 7 years, and have spent nearly half that time trying to get out of it. With the market the way it is, it has become clear to us that the only way out is to rent out our home. With a little advertising, we generated some interest. We have a couple bringing us a security deposit today, and they want to be in June 1. So where are we headed???

To a small town of 8,000 people on the plains about 25 miles north of Denver. We signed a lease today and gave a security deposit on a house there. The home is a year old; it's a 3 bedroom, 2 bath ranch with a full unfinished basement, nice yard, and fantastic mountain views. There are two wards in our town, and the church building is only 3 1/2 miles away. We are ecstatic, yet somewhat unbelieving as of yet, that we are getting out of here. We can move in on May 31. Yes, I am aware of how soon that is.

This move will give us the two things we desperately need: a shorter commute for Brian (13 miles versus 49 miles - major gas savings!) and enough room for our family. I feel a little strange about having to rent rather than a buy a home for now, but for lots of reasons, it just makes sense for the time being.

There you have it - pictures coming soon!

Mother's Day 2008

Happy Mother's Day all you moms!

I had a great Mother's Day - thank you Brian for working so hard to give me a day off! He cooked, cleaned, bought thoughtful gifts, etc. I love shrimp, so for dinner he made grilled shrimp and scallion skewers with grilled red pepper dipping sauce. Yum, yum, yum. It was delicious!

After dinner, we went on a long family walk, one of my favorite things to do. It was truly the most beautiful spring evening. Perfect weather.

I love being a mom, and am so grateful for the three little people who made me a mom. And, thank you to my mom and Brian's mom for all you have done and still do for us. We love you!

Now I'm just waiting for Brian to finish cleaning the kitchen so I can get my annual Mother's Day foot rub...

Stinkin' allergies

Connor went to a friend's birthday party this afternoon, and this is what he came home looking like:

The house where the party was held had 2 cats and a dog, and he is very allergic to them. His eyes were super swollen, red and itchy, and he couldn't breathe. Claritin didn't give him much relief even. Poor kid. I think allergies are really about the only thing he got from me. I have terrible allergies. Then again, so does Brian. Our kids are pretty much doomed. I had to go home early from SO many birthday/slumber parties when I was younger if the house had dogs or cats. Last time I had skin testing, on a scale of "1" to "4," I was an "8" to dogs. So annoying.

We are taking Connor in next week for skin testing again, to re-evaluate where his allergies are as he heads into kindergarten. His last skin testing was when he was 2 and had a bad peanut butter reaction. Yep, it's a peanut allergy.

And, we've had a rough hayfever season in our house. Brian, Connor and I are all living on allergy meds, with limited relief. It's been a veritable cacophony of sniffles, sneezes and coughs 'round here.
